Overview

This course helps teachers build a deep appreciation of Europe’s shared cultural heritage — and turn that into practical teaching strategies for their own classroom, using digital tools and interactive learning.

In Nevşehir, at the heart of Cappadocia, participants explore real UNESCO World Heritage sites — from Göreme’s rock-cut Byzantine churches to the underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu — experiencing first-hand the history, art and architecture they’ll bring back to their students.

Unlike a single-site city tour, Cappadocia’s heritage is spread across a wider volcanic valley region rather than one walkable old town — Göreme, Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu sit roughly 20–40 minutes apart by road, each shaped by the same soft tuff landscape but telling a different part of the story: monastic cave churches above ground, entire cities carved below it. That combination gives teachers a rare classroom case study where geology, history and architecture are literally the same subject, not three separate ones — useful for cross-curricular work between geography, science, history and art, and for showing students that “heritage” is not only stone buildings but also the ground it was carved from, a landscape that is still actively changing today.

Days 3–4 explore how Cappadocia's volcanic rock has shaped human settlement for centuries — from Byzantine monks carving churches into the tuff at Göreme to entire underground cities at Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu — a heritage story that starts with the landscape itself, not just its monuments.

Geology, Conservation and a Fragile Landscape

Cappadocia's soft volcanic tuff, the same rock that made Göreme's churches and Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu's underground cities possible, is also actively eroding — UNESCO's own monitoring flags water infiltration, salt weathering and tourism pressure as ongoing threats to the region's fairy chimneys and rock-cut sites. A short session connects what participants see on Days 3–4 to this real, current conservation challenge, giving heritage-and-sustainability teaching a concrete European example rather than an abstract one.

Please note: the course fee covers all training sessions and the guided visits to heritage sites in the daily programme. Entrance tickets to museums, archaeological sites and monuments — where a site charges admission — are not included and are paid directly by each participant, based on what they choose to visit. Ask us for an estimated on-site budget when you apply.

Please note: sessions run from 09:30 to 15:00, Monday to Friday, with a break for lunch. Timings can shift a little to suit the venue and the group. If you'd like a specific topic covered, let us know when you apply — the confirmed day-by-day schedule is sent to registered participants ahead of the course.

Certificate: we issue the Certificate of Attendance to everyone who's present for at least 80% of the course — tracked with the daily sign-in sheet (see Certificate & assessment).

How to prepare

Comfortable, sturdy footwear is recommended — the Day 4 underground-city visits (Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu) include some low, narrow and uneven passages.

After the course

Participants will receive their certificates (Certificate of Attendance + Europass).

Participants will complete a general course evaluation and event survey.

Follow-up support: an email group is created for idea exchange, self-evaluation materials are provided, and participants receive a follow-up check-in after 3 months to discuss progress on bringing Nevşehir's cultural heritage into their teaching.

Use the digital resource developed on Day 5 as the basis for a short staff-room briefing, sharing how Cappadocia's geological and cultural heritage can support cross-curricular teaching in geography, science, history and art — and provide a concrete input for the school's European Development Plan.

Frequently asked

This course is an eligible training activity under Erasmus+ Key Action 1 (School Education Mobility) — the course fee, travel and subsistence fall within the eligible cost categories. Whether it is covered depends on your own project's approved grant agreement and your National Agency's rules; we provide all the invoices, attendance records and certificates your National Agency requires for reporting.

B1 is enough — you do not need to be fluent. Trainers speak slowly and plainly, every session is built around doing something rather than sitting and listening, and groups are mixed by nationality so people help each other out. A rough test: if you could follow a staff meeting held in English and ask a question in it, you will be fine here.

Absolutely — group bookings of 3+ from one school receive priority placement, and we can schedule a dedicated session for groups of 12 or more.

This course runs only in Nevşehir — the daily programme is built around that city's own heritage sites, so it is not offered in our other centres.

Tuition, all course materials, both certificates (attendance + Europass Mobility) and a half-day guided tour of the host city with a local guide. Flights, accommodation and travel insurance are booked separately — we send a vetted hotel list.
