Inclusive Classrooms: Educating Students with ASD and ADHD

In the early 1960s, clinicians and parents at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill grew frustrated with therapies that treated autism as something to correct through repetition and reward alone. Working with families rather than around them, they began mapping how autistic children actually processed a classroom — and built a program around it. That program became Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren), and its central idea reshaped how structured teaching is done six decades later.

The insight holds up: autistic and ADHD learners often manage a classroom better when the environment itself carries some of the instructional load, rather than relying on verbal direction alone. TEACCH’s structured-teaching toolkit — visual schedules that make the sequence of a lesson visible, individual work systems that show a student what to do and when it’s finished, and physical zoning that separates instruction, independent work and transition space — has since been validated across a 2024 systematic review of the model’s outcomes literature.

This course translates that toolkit into a five-day, hands-on sequence for mainstream classroom teachers, not clinicians. Participants build individualized education plans that incorporate structured-teaching elements for students with ASD and ADHD, then test how the same visual-schedule and zoning logic extends into digital tools — tablets, apps and screen-based routines — without losing the predictability that makes the approach work in the first place.

The result is a classroom-management repertoire that doesn’t ask a teacher to become a specialist overnight: zoning a room, building a visual schedule, and adapting an IEP around a student’s actual processing style are skills that transfer directly into Monday’s lesson plan, in any subject and any age group.
