Empowering Educators through Mindfulness and Well-Being

A 2024 randomised controlled trial (Lensen et al., Frontiers in Education) found that an eight-week MBSR course lowered Dutch elementary teachers' perceived stress, a large drop that was still moderate three months later; this five-day week teaches practices drawn from MBSR and sends you home with a plan to keep going.

Why this is Erasmus+ eligible

Structured, multi-day programme (5 days) with a pre-defined schedule and learning outcomes — not a passive lecture format.

Built around interaction: participants engage directly with the trainer and with peers from other countries throughout the course.

Transnational by design — open to participants travelling from outside the host country, a core requirement of Erasmus+ mobility funding.

Overview

Teacher burnout gets talked about constantly and treated seriously rarely — a wellbeing day here, a poster in the staffroom there. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), the eight-week programme Jon Kabat-Zinn developed in 1979, is an approach to teacher stress that has been tested in a randomised trial with teachers, not just recommended.

A 2024 randomised controlled trial of an eight-week MBSR course with Dutch elementary school teachers (Lensen et al., published in Frontiers in Education, DOI 10.3389/feduc.2024.1385375) found that participants reported significantly lower perceived stress than a waitlist-control group — a large effect immediately after the programme (Cohen’s d = 0.84) that remained moderate three months later (d = 0.69), alongside improvements in emotion regulation and self-compassion. That is real, measurable change, though not a fix for the structural causes of burnout.

This week is five days, not eight weeks, so it is not that programme. It teaches practices drawn from MBSR and gives you a plan to keep practising at home:

  • Monday — breathing and mindful sitting, and what stress does in a teaching day.
  • Tuesday — a short body scan, and how mindfulness shows up in your relationships with students; you begin a two-minute practice for your own class.
  • Wednesday — mindful movement and everyday routines, and your own personal practice plan.
  • Thursday — a short pause for hard classroom moments; you try your student practice on colleagues for ten minutes.
  • Friday — you finish a practice plan for the eight weeks after the course, and choose one practice for your classroom.

Every practice is an invitation: you can sit out any exercise or skip any sharing. This is professional development, not therapy.

Description

Each day has one practice drawn from MBSR, read aloud by the trainer, followed by an optional moment of sharing: breathing and mindful sitting on Monday, a short body scan on Tuesday, mindful movement and one everyday routine on Wednesday, and a short pause for a hard moment on Thursday. Friday turns them into two plans: a personal practice plan for the eight weeks after the course, and one practice you will try with your own class.

The classroom side builds up over the week. On Tuesday you begin designing a two-minute practice for your students, for example breathing, listening to a chime or a short pause. On Thursday you try it for ten minutes on colleagues and get feedback. Each practice is described in plain words and is optional for students as well, so a student who does not want to take part has an easy way out.

Nothing needs to be bought. A plain timer, a chime or bell sound and short scripts the trainer reads aloud are enough; apps are only mentioned as an option, and every practice works without them. Practices are drawn from MBSR and the week does not claim to be the eight-week programme itself. Sharing is never about diagnosis or personal history.

The course is about a teacher’s own stress and a few practices for the classroom. Building strengths such as resilience and positive relationships is covered in Soft Skills for Strong Teachers and Positive Schools, and whole-school approaches to wellbeing in For Teachers: New Strategies for a Positive and Happy School. Practising is more useful than reading about it, so most of each day is practice.

Methodology

Practice Over Theory

Theoretical lessons are kept brief — most of the time is spent on mindfulness workshops, meditation, breathing exercises and stress-management practice.

Personal & Group Practice

Hands-on mindfulness exercises combine with group work and peer feedback to build your own mindfulness skills.

Simple Tools

A plain timer, a chime and short scripts read aloud are all that is used; apps are discussed only as an option, and every practice works without them.

What you'll take home

Practise breathing, a short body scan, mindful movement and a pause for hard moments, and know which suits you.

Use mindfulness-based practices in the classroom to strengthen student relationships, with an easy way out for every student.

Leave with a plan for the eight weeks after the course to keep a short daily practice going.

Pause before responding in a hard classroom moment, so that you make more conscious, balanced decisions.

Daily programme

  • Icebreaker: "Silent Mind" — 1 minute of silent mental awareness, then optional sharing
  • Jon Kabat-Zinn's 1979 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme: its core practices, and what a five-day week can and cannot be next to an eight-week course
  • Causes and impact of stress in the teaching profession
  • Practice: breathing and mindful sitting
  • Warm-up: "Mindfulness Circle" — brief group meditation and optional sharing
  • Practice: a short body scan
  • Emotional awareness in teacher-student relationships
  • Mindfulness strategies to increase student focus in the classroom
  • Group work: begin designing a two-minute mindfulness practice to try in your own classroom
  • Warm-up: "Sensory Awareness" exercise
  • Practice: mindful movement and one everyday routine done with full attention
  • Emotional intelligence and mindfulness: noticing an emotion before acting on it
  • Daily routines (meditation, breathing, healthy habits) that enhance well-being
  • Beginning your personal practice plan
  • Practice: a short pause for a hard classroom moment (stop, breathe, notice, choose)
  • Mindful classroom-management strategies for a calmer learning environment
  • Simple tools for short classroom practices: a timer, a chime, a script read aloud
  • Ten-minute trial of your classroom practice on colleagues, with feedback: one thing that worked, one thing to try
  • Practice: a longer sitting to finish the week
  • Your eight-week practice plan: what, when, and what might get in the way
  • One classroom practice for your first week back, and what you can do alone, with a colleague or must ask your school for
  • General assessment and feedback on the course
  • Certification ceremony and cultural excursion

Materials & tools

Worked on during the week: short practice scripts read aloud by the trainer, a classroom practice design sheet with a peer-feedback form, and an eight-week practice plan to take home. No app, account or purchase is needed.

Certificate & assessment

This is a Certificate of Attendance, not an exam-based qualification — recognition comes from completing the structured programme, not from passing a test. The real, lasting value is in the competencies listed above under What you'll take home.

Type your name above — clearly marked "SAMPLE" in the PDF, not an official document.

The real certificate is signed by your trainer and EMA's authorised signatory. Your own signature isn't on this document — it's captured separately, on the Europass Mobility document.

Need to verify a real certificate? Check it online using the serial number and participant's full name, or contact us directly — [email protected], OID E10304561.

Attendance

Tracked using a sign-in sheet with one signature per participant per day (paper or digital). This record is used to issue your Certificate of Attendance and Europass Mobility document. View sign-in sheet (PDF)

Output

Every participant leaves with a completed Dissemination & School Impact Plan — a step-by-step template for applying the course back at your school (see below).

Feedback

An end-of-course evaluation form is sent to every participant after the course ends — a chance to reflect on what you've learned and how you'll apply it, and it helps us keep improving the course for future participants.

Your paperwork

Keep your travel tickets, boarding passes and (if you used green travel) any related receipts — your school or National Agency may ask for these for their own Erasmus+ reporting.

How to prepare

Nothing is needed in advance. Wear comfortable clothes; every practice can be done sitting on a chair, and you can sit out any exercise.

School impact

After completing this Teacher Training & Classroom Management course, the participating staff member can transfer outcomes directly to their school: a short briefing for colleagues sharing the key takeaways, applying relevant tools or strategies from the programme in their own role, and inclusion of the course materials in the school's professional development resources — turning one person's mobility into a wider institutional gain that supports the school's European Development Plan. Use the Dissemination & School Impact Plan below to fill in your own — it saves as you go and can generate a one-page summary for your coordinator too.

After the course

Participants will receive their certificates (Certificate of Attendance + Europass).

Participants will complete a general course evaluation and event survey.

Participants will receive course materials, videos, photos, and PDF documents in both digital and print formats.

Follow-up support: an email group is created for idea exchange, self-evaluation materials are provided, and participants receive a follow-up check-in after 3 months to discuss progress on applying mindfulness and well-being strategies in their own teaching.

Frequently asked

This course is an eligible training activity under Erasmus+ Key Action 1 (School Education Mobility) — the course fee, travel and subsistence fall within the eligible cost categories. Whether it is covered depends on your own project's approved grant agreement and your National Agency's rules; we provide all the invoices, attendance records and certificates your National Agency requires for reporting.

B1 is enough — you do not need to be fluent. Trainers speak slowly and plainly, every session is built around doing something rather than sitting and listening, and groups are mixed by nationality so people help each other out. A rough test: if you could follow a staff meeting held in English and ask a question in it, you will be fine here.

Absolutely — group bookings of 3+ from one school receive priority placement, and we can schedule a dedicated session for groups of 12 or more.

Our courses run on request at our centres in Antalya, İstanbul, İzmir, Mersin, Budapest, Bremen and Rome. Tell us your preferred city and dates and we will arrange a session.

Tuition, all course materials, both certificates (attendance + Europass Mobility) and a half-day guided tour of the host city with a local guide. Flights, accommodation and travel insurance are booked separately — we send a vetted hotel list.

You can move to any later session free of charge. Cancellations made 30+ days before the start date receive a full refund; a reduced refund applies closer to the date — see our full Cancellation & Refund Policy for the exact schedule.

No. Each day introduces one practice drawn from Jon Kabat-Zinn's MBSR — breathing, a short body scan, mindful movement, a pause for hard moments — from the beginning, and no prior experience is required.

Every practice is an invitation: you can sit out any exercise or skip any sharing. This is a professional-development course, not therapy. If you are currently in treatment for anxiety, depression or trauma, it may be worth mentioning the course to your practitioner; nobody is asked about their health.
