About this course

This week you read Budapest as two cities joined by a river — Buda’s hilltop and Pest’s avenues — and turn what you find there into a digital activity for your own students. Monday — you introduce your school, ask which century counts as a layered building’s “real” one, and set up the digital tools…

Methodology

Two Cities, One Heritage, Across the Danube

Day 3 stays on Buda's Castle Hill — a single walkable cluster carrying medieval, Ottoman and 19th-century layers on one hilltop — while Day 4 crosses to Pest's riverside and Andrássy Avenue, a 19th-century grid built for a different kind of grandeur. Participants experience first-hand how Budapest's split geography produced one UNESCO-listed but genuinely two-sided cultural identity, rather than treating the city as a single undifferentiated "old town".

Digital Tools Workshop, Built From What You've Seen

a hands-on session where participants turn photos and notes from Days 3–4 into a real digital output — a short digital storytelling piece, a simple interactive quiz, or a mini virtual exhibit — using straightforward tools they can realistically use with their own students.

Direct Classroom Transfer

strategies for teaching a multi-layered, two-sided heritage city, ready to adapt to participants' own students and curriculum.

What you'll take home

Explain how Budapest's medieval, Ottoman and Habsburg-era layers — from Buda Castle Hill to the Hungarian Parliament Building — reflect Europe's complex, multi-ethnic cultural history.

Integrate cultural heritage topics into lesson plans, using digital tools and interactive resources built from a real two-city case study.

Design classroom activities that build students' intercultural awareness and appreciation for a city shaped by more than one civilisation and empire.

Connect teaching to the EU's cultural-heritage priorities using a concrete European example rather than an abstract one.
