About this course

This week you take Bremen’s compact old town — a city that won its self-governance, nearly lost part of its heritage and then saved it — and turn it into a digital activity you can use with your own students. Monday — you introduce your school, look at where heritage fits in your own lesson…

Methodology

Civic Freedom to Artistic Vision, Through Field-Based Learning

Days 3–4 trace three layers of Bremen's own identity built into one compact walk — medieval civic autonomy at the Marktplatz, centred on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Town Hall and Roland statue (with Bremen Cathedral standing on the same square, though it is not itself part of the UNESCO inscription), everyday medieval trade and craft life in the Schnoor quarter, and a 1920s artistic reinvention of that same "free Hanseatic city" identity along the Böttcherstraße — so participants can teach how one city's self-image was built, nearly lost, and rebuilt, not a single frozen period.

Digital Tools Workshop, Built From What You've Seen

a hands-on session where participants turn photos and notes from Days 3–4 into a real digital output — a short digital storytelling piece, a simple interactive quiz, or a mini virtual exhibit — using straightforward tools they can realistically use with their own students.

Direct Classroom Transfer

strategies for teaching civic history and self-governance through a real, UNESCO-listed monument, ready to adapt to participants' own students and curriculum.

Heritage in Context, Not Just in the Past

Sessions connect what participants experience with the responsibility of preserving heritage that has genuinely been at risk — Bremen Cathedral was damaged by WWII bombing and its vault had to be rebuilt, and the Schnoor quarter itself faced demolition plans in the 1950s before citizen action and a decade-long restoration (1959–1970) saved it. Preservation becomes something participants can observe and reflect on — not simply a concept explained in theory.

What you'll take home

Explain how Bremen's Marktplatz ensemble, Schnoor quarter and Böttcherstraße reflect different layers of civic and cultural identity within a single European city.

Integrate cultural heritage and civic-education topics into lesson plans, using digital tools and interactive resources built from a real case study.

Design classroom activities that build students' understanding of civic autonomy, self-governance and democratic participation, using a concrete historical monument as the entry point.

Connect teaching to the EU's cultural-heritage priorities using a concrete European example rather than an abstract one.

Reflect on how Bremen's own experience of nearly losing and then saving part of its heritage can build students' intercultural awareness and active citizenship, and plan how to transfer it into their own school context.
