About this course

Rome’s Ancient, Papal and Baroque layers each get their own field day, and each day teaches a method — observation, spolia-reading, workshop synthesis — that feeds directly into one project you build across the week. Monday — you work through heritage typologies and curriculum-integration strategies, and form your working group. Tuesday — you practise structured…

Methodology

Field-Based Pedagogy, Not Sightseeing

each of the three field days models a specific teaching technique — structured outdoor-education observation on Day 2, a spolia heritage scavenger hunt (adaptable for school trips) on Day 3, and a hands-on workshop turning field material into a draft lesson plan on Day 4 — so participants practise the methods they will bring home, rather than only watching a guide.

Three Layers of Rome, Three Field Days

Day 2 stays inside Ancient Rome's compact civic and religious core — the Colosseum, the Imperial Fora and Capitoline Hill. Day 3 moves to St Peter's and Trastevere, a separate part of the city shaped by a later, Christian era. Day 4 is a dedicated Baroque day — the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Caravaggio's and Borromini's work — so participants experience Rome's Ancient, Papal and Baroque layers as three honest, separate days rather than one impossible walking loop.

Digital Tools Workshop, Before the Field Days

a dedicated Day 1 session on interactive mapping platforms and QR-code-based instructional tools, held before the field days so the tools are already in hand for the Day 3 scavenger hunt.

Sensitivity and Responsibility Through Material Reuse

structured reflection sessions — including a dedicated debrief built around the week's photographs, sketches and field notes — turn what participants observe on-site, especially evidence of how ancient material has been reused and reinterpreted across later centuries, into classroom-ready awareness-building, not just a description of what was seen. The debrief also covers photographing a living neighbourhood like Trastevere respectfully, and teaching students to do the same before any comparable trip.

A Curriculum Integration Project From Day One to Day Five

the course launches a Curriculum Integration Project in transnational working groups on Day 1, refines it with material gathered across the three field days, and closes with group presentations and peer feedback on Day 5 — so the outcome is a concrete, ready-to-adapt classroom resource, not only a certificate.

What you'll take home

Apply structured outdoor-education techniques — observation, sketching, field-noting — to turn any heritage site into a teaching resource.

Use the concept of spolia — material reuse across centuries — as a ready-made classroom lens for teaching cultural continuity and change.

Integrate cultural heritage topics into lesson plans, using digital mapping and QR-code tools tested during the course.

Take home a complete Curriculum Integration Project, developed across the week and refined through peer feedback, ready to adapt for your own classroom.
