Course Description

About the Course

Climate change is currently affecting every country on every continent. It affects and will continue to affect our quality of life unless we try to educate ourselves and our children to make changes in our lives that will less impact the environment.

The ‘My Eco-School and Sustainable Development’ course is aimed at teachers and education personnel who want to improve in the field of environmental education, management and sustainable development. It is a training course for preschool, primary and secondary school teachers, management staff and education staff. During this course you will learn more about the environmental issues facing our world and region and how it affects our lives and society, and the principles and techniques of education for sustainable development.

Learning Outcomes

  • Familiarize with the principles and techniques of education for sustainable development
  • Become aware of the environmental issues that our world/ region is facing now
  • To Promote situational, real-life and outdoor learning, to spur sustainable practices in and outside school
  • Be able to set objectives and design educational programmes for sustainable development
  • Be able to use and adapt materials to your own context of teaching
  • To Improve the ecological footprint and the sustainability performance of the school

Programme of training activities day-by-day:

1st Day
  • What is Eco-School?
  • Today’s World: Climate Change and Environmental Issues
  • Sustainable development as an interdisciplinary approach
2nd Day
  • How can you make your school more environmentally friendly?
  • Management of an environmentally friendly school: projects and ideas
  • Examples of good practice from the EU
3rd Day
  • Your school and local community: together for a green world!
  • Teaching outside the classroom: outdoor activities
  • Focus: Waste management
  • Examples of good practice
4th Day
  • European policies and examples of good practice
  • How to get involved at the international level?
  • Cooperation – key skill for sustainable development
  • Using short videos in your lessons to teach sustainable development
  • Focus: Water
5th Day
  • Today’s World: Climate Change and Environmental Issues
  • Plans for a better future: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
  • Focus on UN Goal 13: Climate action
  • Issuance of certificates and overall assessment

Follow-up

Trainees will be given soft and hard copies of all lesson materials, which they can present  to their colleagues at their own organizations to generate interest in the strategies learnt during the training course. In addition, a mailing list of participants will be created in order to exchange ideas/experiences. Self-evaluation materials will be provided. At the end of the course the participants will fill in a questionnaire in order to get a detailed feedback for the effectiveness of the training event.
