Art as Therapy: Emotional and Social Development in Schools

Course Description

This course is designed to teach educators how to use art therapy techniques to support students’ emotional and social development. Art is a powerful tool for students to express their emotions and strengthen social bonds. In line with the 2021-2027 Erasmus+ Programme, the course focuses on how to integrate the therapeutic power of art into education, fostering a more inclusive learning environment and enhancing emotional awareness.
Participants will learn how to use art-based learning activities to help students develop self-awareness, emotional balance, and social interaction skills. The course offers both theoretical and practical guidance on how to incorporate art therapy practices into the classroom.

Course Methodology

This course follows an activity-based, hands-on, and participant-centered methodology. Educators will explore how art can be used to support students’ emotional and social development. Through art therapy techniques and creative expression, educators will learn how to foster emotional balance and social interaction in the classroom. Participants will also work on practical projects that they can easily transfer to their own educational settings.
In addition, participants will use digital tools in combination with art therapy practices to design projects that enhance students’ emotional and social skills.

Tentative Daily Programme

Day 1: Introduction to Art and Therapy
  • Icebreaker Activity: “Circle of Emotional Expression” – Participants share their emotions and experiences related to art to start the course.
  • The Therapeutic Power of Art – What is art therapy, and how can it be used in education?
  • Creating Emotional Awareness Through Art – How can we increase students’ emotional awareness using art therapy techniques?
  • Project Simulation: Planning Art-Based Emotional Development Activities – Participants plan and present art-based activities focused on emotional development.
Day 2: Strengthening Social Bonds Through Art
  • Warm-up Activity: “Creative Connections” – Participants discuss how to strengthen social bonds in their classrooms through art.
  • Social Interaction Through Art – How can we increase students’ social interaction using art therapy?
  • Group Work: Developing Social Skills Through Art – Educators create projects that develop social skills through art-based activities.
  • Project Presentations and Feedback
Day 3: Creative Expression and Emotional Balance
  • Warm-up Activity: “Art and Emotional Expression” – Participants discuss how to encourage emotional expression through art in the classroom.
  • Achieving Emotional Balance Through Art – How can art therapy help students achieve emotional balance?
  • Creative Expression Using Digital Tools – Using digital tools like Padlet and Google Classroom to support students’ creative expression.
  • Project Presentations and Feedback
Day 4: Self-Discovery Through Art
  • Developing Self-Awareness with Art Therapy – How can we help students discover themselves through art therapy?
  • Fostering Empathy and Collaboration Through Art – How to develop empathy and collaboration skills through art-based activities.
  • Group Project Presentations and Feedback
Day 5: Course Evaluation and Certification Ceremony
  • Course Evaluation – Participants reflect on their learning and discuss future collaboration opportunities.
  • Collaboration on Future Art and Therapy Projects – Participants explore opportunities for collaboration on future art-based emotional development projects.
  • Certification Ceremony and Course Cake Cutting
  • Cultural Excursion Support

At the End of the Course

  • Participants will receive their certificates.
  • Participants will provide a general evaluation of the course and complete the event survey.
  • Participants will receive course materials, videos, photos, and PDF documents in both digital and print formats.

Follow-up and Support

After the course, participants will be provided with digital and printed materials. An email group will be created to facilitate ongoing collaboration and the sharing of ideas related to art therapy and emotional development in education.
