Traditional Bazaars
Crossroads of Mediterranean Commerce
A shimmering coastline of golden beaches, magnificent ancient sites, and modern cityscape – viewed from the Mediterranean, Mersin still retains much of its unique and majestic landscape. As soon as you set foot in the city, it becomes clear that it is changing, blending the old city with the new.
Between the tourist favourite Ulu Cami Bazaar and the Fish Market lies the inner heart of Mersin, the crossroads of commerce, where these wonderful marketplaces reside. In this winding maze of alleys are the last real markets of Mersin, with everything your heart desires, from fresh seafood to the last traditional craftsmen in the city. With so many speciality shops, tourists and locals can immerse themselves in a deluge of variety and choice. The only thing you really have to think about is how far you haggle to get what you want for the right price.
Ulu Cami Bazaar
The Shopper’s Paradise
From handmade textiles to traditional copperware, from delicate citrus products to ornate Mediterranean spices, the lantern-lined alleys of Mersin’s Ulu Cami Bazaar are home to the city’s finest treasures. In this historic shopper’s paradise, the arched doorways are covered from wall to wall with traditional Turkish antiquities, mementos of your visit and local produce.
There are multiple gates leading into the covered bazaar from all directions. The main gate is marked with traditional Ottoman architecture and the assurance of authentic Mediterranean shopping experience.
A stroll through the hive of activity of the vendors and sellers haggling and bargaining like their life depended on it all the while sipping tea brings as much wonder and delight as a little entertainment. The shops date back to the prosperous times of the 19th century, when Mersin began developing as an important port city. Today, the bazaar is one of the most authentic covered markets in the Mediterranean region, its winding labyrinth filled with up to 400 shops and spanning nearly 20 shopping streets and alleys is a feast of retail therapy for the hardy tourist and locals alike.
Fish Market
Unwinding In A Traditional Market
But if a lively marketplace where you are likely to lose yourself is not up your alley, a quick jaunt to the slow and well-organized Fish Market, the street market near the marina, and also one of Mersin’s other historical trading posts, is well worth a visit for a calmer, authentic experience. Here you will also find small shops selling traditional Mediterranean items such as fresh seafood, local spices, and traditional crafts.
The market stalls of the Fish Market were originally built in connection with the fishing port of Mersin so that the local fishermen could sell their daily catch directly to the public.
Thanks to its historical connection, the Fish Market – popularly known as Balık Pazarı – is centrally located, and right next to the bazaar is a lively open-air café serving tea, and traditional Turkish food.
It is not only home to countless vendors selling various seafood items and treasures worth taking home, but a chance to discover the secret of Mediterranean cuisine: fresh ingredients and traditional recipes. The Fish Market is a must for food lovers, and the surrounding area is a great addition for culture and history enthusiasts.
Citrus Market
Variety Is the Spice of Life
Turn right before the Citrus Market and you find yourself walking up the fleet of shops that seems to be a continuation of the marketplace.
Once inside the Citrus Market, row upon row of stalls and stands and hanging delicacies, covers the citrus bazaar that was built in the early 20th century and is Mersin’s fragrant hub for all things fresh. Stacks of oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits line up with shops selling colorful Mediterranean produce. With a few welcoming exchanges with the vendors, you may taste fresh juice and haggle for the perfect price.
The Narenciye Çarşısı, also known as the Citrus Market whilst considerably smaller than the Ulu Cami Bazaar, is still nevertheless a feast for the senses. Originally built as part of the agricultural development of the region, the bazaar is a popular central place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, local herbs, spice blends, tea, and other delicacies.
The Citrus Market is a must-see for all first-time visitors to Mersin, especially foodies. Do not be afraid to taste before you buy – it’s tradition and even expected.
